Does IGCSE really help with studying abroad? Here’s what the data suggests
IGCSE is recognised by universities worldwide, but CBSE and ICSE students face no real disadvantage applying to foreign universities either.
Recognition abroad is probably the biggest reason many Indian families consider IGCSE for their child. Cambridge IGCSE is recognised by universities across the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Singapore and a long list of other countries, and it holds recognised equivalence in India too, so a child isn’t boxed out of Indian colleges either.
But there’s a misconception worth clearing up: a CBSE or ICSE student is not at any real disadvantage when applying to universities abroad. Foreign universities admit students from all three boards every single year without hesitation. IGCSE simply follows a teaching and assessment style that is already familiar to many international universities, which can make the transition feel smoother rather than fundamentally different.
IGCSE, short for International General Certificate of Secondary Education, is offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education and followed in schools across more than 160 countries, with the number of Cambridge-affiliated schools steadily growing in Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Unlike CBSE and ICSE, which are based on the Indian education system, it takes an international approach while still covering maths, science, languages and social sciences.
The trade-off is cost: IGCSE schools in cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru can charge Rs 5 lakh to Rs 14 lakh a year depending on the grade and facilities, a price point that settles the debate for many families regardless of the curriculum’s international recognition.
